Get to know Steve Wilson, Payments Support Specialist at WAS
How long have you worked in payments?
Since the early 90s. Initially, I was helping run an ATM processing company for Woodforest National Bank. Woodforest only had 2 branches when I first started working there, so to see how it’s grown and how Woodforest Acceptance Solutions has grown is unbelievable. In 2005, I started working in sales at the bank and held that role for almost 8 years, then first transitioned into merchant support in 2014.
What’s been the biggest change you’ve seen in the industry?
Going from where most merchants were using standalone “dumb” terminals to terminals that have software that enables them with their business like our Delta1st software. Those who can figure it out are the most successful when they can manage their business through their POS.
What’s your role entail – what are your favorite parts?
Answering phones, submitting apps, problem-solving, supporting merchants with what their needs are, and generally educating merchants, because it’s a lot of their first times taking payments or running a business.
I enjoy my teammates, and I’ve had a lot of great bosses and I think our COO Chris Hartner is at the top. It’s exciting to work for a forward-thinking, aggressive company trying to meet the challenges of the future today.
What advice would you give someone joining your team?
Take it slow. Take notes. Don’t get easily frustrated. It’s an everchanging environment – almost on a daily basis. You just have to learn to accept that and deal with it and keep moving.
What sets WAS apart?
Great customer service. I get a lot of people that tell me, “This is wonderful that I can call you and not have to sit on the phone!”
And then our Delta1st platform. The fact that somebody like our CEO Todd Linden is out there in the market pushing our product, with all his years of experience, knowledge, and connections… He’s going to continue to push us forward to meet the next challenge. We’re growing and going somewhere, and it’s fun to be a part of that.
Plus, I think we have great team and are the perfect size to where we can have a unique cohesiveness.
Outside of work, what do you like to do?
I have a boat, so I fish, and my brother-in-law has a deer lease, so I hunt!
